ADA Guidelines

Admissions

Admissions material should be considered everything sent out to the applicant or potential applicant.  Admissions materials and recruitment literature should:

  • contain the "notice of non-discrimination" required by Section 504 ("The university does not discriminate in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs and activities");

  • identify the responsible employee for ADA coordination and

  • contain pictures of students with disabilities.

The whole file should be considered when a disability is involved (e.g., teacher references, community experiences, etc.) rather than just grades and test scores.  The disability should be considered when readmission is the issue if the learning disability was recently discovered.

Non-discrimination in admissions includes the recruiting, application, testing, interviewing and decision-making processes.

For more information on students and the ADA, see "A Checklist for ADA/Section 504 Compliance for Student Programs and Services" (Self-Audit Checklist).
