Copyright and Digital Images
Introduction
This memorandum was written to address legal issues that might arise from copying images preserved (in this case) on slides and placing them online as digital images to facilitate accessibility by students in one of the university’s schools. The digital images would be thumbnail-sized, but capable of enlargement by "clicking" on the image.
The slides originated from a variety of sources: produced by students, faculty, and staff; purchased from vendors; and scanned or photographed from books or magazines.
Different rules apply to each image, depending on its source, the subject matter, and the conditions surrounding its use. However, some guidelines exist to assist in achieving the dual goal of minimizing the risk of liability for violation of copyright law and, at the same time, preserving the university’s ability to collect and display photographs, slides, and now digital images, as part of its educational mission.
