"Parental Leave Act of 1994"

D.C. Code Ann. §§ 32-521 et seq

The Law: Employees who are parents or guardians of a child (or any other person listed in 32-521.01 DC Code ) are entitled a total of 24 hours of leave during any 12-month period to attend or participate in school-related events for their children or to celebrate DC Emancipation Day on April 16th.

Employers may only deny the leave if it would disrupt the employer's business, making production or service delivery unusually difficult. The leave will be unpaid unless the employee uses paid leave provided by the employer. The employee must notify the employer at least 10 days prior to the event unless it is unforeseeable. The employee must not be denied employment or seniority benefits accrued before or during the leave.

Posting: All employers must post in a conspicuous place a notice that is an excerpt or summary of the pertinent provisions of the Act and information that pertains to filing a complaint. An employer who fails to do so will be fined no more than $100 day.
