"D.C. Charitable Solicitation Act"

D.C. Code Ann. § 44-1701 et seq.

The Law: The Act applies to any persons soliciting, receiving or attempting to solicit or receive contributions. However, there is an exception for small solicitations (not receiving more than $1,500 in one calendar year) and for solicitations of members and family for any church, club, or society within the specified requirements.

In addition, there is an exemption for religious and educational solicitations, but proof of exemption must first be filed with the Director of the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, consisting of a letter ruling issued by the IRS holding the person exempt under I.R.C. § 501. All those subject to the Act must complete an application for certificate of registration.
