Section 515 of the Tariff Act; 28 U.S.C. § 2636(a)

See no. 9810.00.60 in the U.S. schedules, the Harmonized System.

This is the law on duty-free entry of scientific instruments for use by educational institutions. Educational institutions can avoid the import duty on scientific equipment if a comparable item is not made in the U.S. Proposed regulations, expected in December 1997, would change the definition of scientific instruments that universities and other groups may wish to import into the U.S. to include parts for instruments that are too large to be pre-assembled.
